Research Interests
Brain tumors continue to be challenging and often devastating neurological diseases. Dr. Kim’s laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms that drive tumor cell behavior in glioblastoma, a malignant brain cancer that is almost invariably fatal, as well as in aggressive forms of benign brain tumors, including meningiomas and pituitary tumors. Using his scientific training as a molecular neurobiologist and his experience as a board-certified brain tumor neurosurgeon, Dr. Kim has acquired expertise in generating model systems–patient-derived glioblastoma cell lines and CRISPR/Cas9-based tumor models in neural stem cells–for both mechanistic and translational studies. His laboratory utilizes multidisciplinary approaches, from genetics and biochemistry to cell biology and preclinical in vivo brain tumor models, to discover new treatments for patients.
