Washington University Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery specialists (also known as urogynecologists) treat women with pelvic floor problems at our Women & Infants Center in St. Louis.

Our female pelvic surgery team treats a variety of conditions that occur on the pelvic floor, which consists of the muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and nerves that help support and control the rectum, uterus, vagina and bladder.

The pelvic floor can be damaged by childbirth, repeated heavy lifting, chronic disease or surgery. Outside of surgery, other treatment options that may be recommended by urogynecologists may include lifestyle changes, weight loss, physical therapy, medication, conservative and surgical options.

Our urogynecologists treat issues caused by the following symptoms:

  • Bladder control problems: Bladder control problems commonly seen by urogynecologists include an inability to hold urine, frequent urination and urine leakage caused by increased abdominal pressure
  • Bowel control problems: Loss of normal control of the bowels that leads to leakage of solid or liquid stool or gas
  • Pelvic organ prolapse: Urogynecologists treat descent of the bladder, uterus and rectum caused by the loss of normal support of the vagina; women may feel bulging tissue protruding through the opening of the vagina

When evaluating these symptoms, our board-certified urogynecologists provide patients with a full range of testing to help properly diagnose pelvic floor disorders, including cystoscopy, urodynamic testing, defecograms, anal-rectal manometry & more.

We understand that while common, pelvic disorders can have a significant impact on how a woman feels. Because of this, every member of our pelvic surgery team is committed to putting the patient first, and improving quality of life before and after surgery.
