Oh, baby!

Baby getting weighed by pediatrician

Congratulations, you are having a baby! So many things to do to get ready for the newest addition to your family. Outfitting the nursery, stocking up on diapers, selecting that perfect stroller and car seat … and everything in between. But THE most important choice is your pediatrician.

Marie Batty, MD, a Washington University pediatrician with Blue Fish Pediatrics, offers advice on choosing the doctor who will be there for you and your growing family from cradle to college.

Dr. Batty says, “Finding the right pediatrician can be overwhelming, but with a little research you can find the best fit for your family. Start your search when you are pregnant. Look for a pediatrician who is board-certified in pediatrics. This means the doctor has passed a pediatric-specific exam demonstrating appropriate medical knowledge and diagnostic skills.”

Make a list of pediatrician offices you may be interested in — based on location and recommendations from your family, friends and OBGYN. Narrow that list down by calling the office and asking questions that are important to you.

  • How many providers are in the office? How many doctors, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners?
  • Are same-day sick appointments available?
  • Does the office have weekend hours?
  • Is there a triage line? Who answers it? Is there a way to contact the office after business hours? What is the usual time to wait for a call-back?
  • Can I meet the doctor before my baby is born?

Dr. Batty adds, “We want to have a long-term relationship with all of our patients. We want to help them through all their bumps and bruises, and see them for regular check-ups to keep them healthy. We want our families to choose the pediatrician that is right for them.”

Our pediatric care providers are part of a select group of Washington University Clinical Associates (WUCA).
